Implementation Guide - Step Six: Sustain The Effort

Task 1:  Identify Training Needs

The first step is to conduct a thorough analysis of training needs. Convene meetings with staff and volunteers to hold detailed discussions about what they perceive as their most significant training needs. These meetings provide a mechanism by which staff and volunteers can have a voice regarding the content and method of training that is most relevant to them. This meeting should include discussions regarding the following:

  • Staff and volunteer needs in relation to their personal lives
  • Staff and volunteer needs in relation to their professional lives
  • Staff and volunteer needs as trainers of their peers
  • Staff and volunteer needs as part of wider partnerships and coalitions
  • During this meeting, organize the recommendations by training topic and lead the group to prioritize the suggestions for training. The Resource Library includes worksheets designed to help you identify and prioritize training needs.
