Collecting Social Indicators
Depending on the substance use problem area that you have identified, your overall approach should be to:
Identify the relevant risk and protective factors;
Identify the archival social indicator data relevant to those risk and protective factors;
Identify opportunities for original research to complement archived data.
As you identify these issues, you should assign individuals to collect this information. Again, we recommend the use of consultant researchers to either guide or conduct these processes, and staff can play important supportive roles in obtaining and compiling this information.
Exhibit 2.3: Collecting Social Indicators can help you by providing organization to the collection of social indicators. It is followed by an example in which information has been filled out to help you understand how to use the form.
