3.7.3 Choose an Organizational Structure, continued
Developing criteria for membership. Overall, there are three essential characteristics to consider when recruiting people for coalitions:
Diversity. You should include a broad range of agencies and groups with an interest in the problem. They can represent a range of skills across diverse ethnic and cultural perspectives. Diversity can ensure that the cultural norms and practical realities of your community are represented adequately and appropriately. Overall, your coalition should look like your community in relation to diversity.
Commitment. You should determine whether prospective members manifest a commitment to the shared coalition vision over their own vested interests.
Clout. Among individuals who represent organizations and agencies, determine whether they can represent their organization at a high enough level that they can have the authority to act on behalf of and commit resources from their agencies.
